The DC Service Jam is one of over 100 local Global Service Jam events that occur simultaneously all over the globe during one weekend each March. Service design enthusiasts join forces and apply design thinking tools such as field interviews, synthesis, brainstorming, and rapid prototyping to a complex challenge with one goal in mind: to create, prototype, and publish a new service with potential to change the world.
Phil was the lead organizer in 2017 through 2019 and convened the organizing team comprised of 5 or 6 seasoned designers. In 2016 he was a member of a four-person organizing team. Together the organizers conceptualize and plan all aspects of the Jam — venue, sponsorship, volunteer management, marketing and outreach, food, speakers, program schedule, and other logistics. The Jam has attracted major sponsors including WeWork, Booz Allen Hamilton, Peer Insight, and Fannie Mae.
Phil's leadership helped build the DC Service Jam’s reputation to that of a premier service design experience for beginners and skilled designers alike. The event has sold out for the last 4 years, while capacity has been increased by 50% to support 45 participants.
